Sarah Staar IM Newsletter -The Superhero Secret

New Year can be a funny time, we have a drink or two, toast in the New Year, and make all sorts of New Year’s resolutions, for example:

-Losing weight

-Quitting my job and start working from home

-Start making $200 , $500 or even $1000 a day

-Pay off the mortgage

-Stop smoking

But all too often we go back to work or back to our normal routine where everything is safe and familiar.

We fall back into the comfortable groove we have created that is safe because we know it.

Before we know it half the year has passed us by and our New Year’s resolution is a distant memory.

And you are fatter.

And you are still grumbling about your bosses and how undervalued you are.

And you are still not earning what you believe you are worth

And you still haven’t paid off the mortgage

So I think it’s crazy (if not downright delusional) to come up with a long list of things to try and do each January without actually thinking it through!

What I do is categorise everything, put my objectives into a proper list, and then commit to them.

I call these life tasks.

Before I commit to a life task I think about it long and hard because I know that it’s going to take up a large chunk of my time and mental commitment.

You need to think of owning a life task a bit like having a superpower, it gives you great power but with it comes great responsibility….

When I implement a life task I know I’m going to achieve the task no matter how outrageous, so I need to keep that in mind…

The other thing to bear in mind is a life task can take over your life, as far as brainpower and commitment goes.

This is very similar to the scene that you may have seen in many superhero films and comics where the superhero brings somebody back from the dead and almost dies in the process because it sucks so much power or life from themselves.

I think this is an interesting analogy, yes it is possible to achieve outrageous and crazy things but, it may suck a lot of power from your mental being. Keep that in mind…..

To be honest, this is the first time I have ever talked about this, I think this is probably one of the big secrets to my success.

OK, so lets say you want to quit your day job and work from home? That’s a really good goal. However, you need to think things through and work out how you are actually going to achieve this.

With any new goal, I work out a sort of action plan and then give myself a deadline. If my deadline is one year I then create 12 goals one for each month of the year.

This is good because now you’ve set yourself 12 deadlines, and we all work better when we have a deadline.

Each month set yourself several tasks that need to be accomplished by the end of the month. Each task will bring you closer to your end goal.

GO FOR IT !!

Films

Passengers (3D)

Passengers (3D)

Last week Dave and I went to see a new science-fiction film……Passengers.

A spacecraft travelling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers are awakened 90 years early.

Dave and I had very different views on the film, I loved the film and thought that it was incredibly well-made and was visually stunning. I guess I’m just a sucker for any science-fiction film based inside a spacecraft.

Dave, on the other hand thought that the plot had a few holes in it even though the film was well crafted as a movie, and well acted too..

Books

Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution

This book documents the rise of the computer hacker from the 1960s to the 1990s. It’s a fascinating read and shows how a small group of computer nerds had a vision that changed our world forever.

This book has fascinating profiles of, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, MIT’s Tech Model Railroad Club, and more.

“Hacker” does not mean you hack computer systems for profit, by the way.

It means you really enjoy writing cool code..

The book has loads of stuff like this in it – well worth a read !!

Sarah Staar IM Newsletter – Cold Wet and Windy

No no……. that’s not me that’s windy !!

I am spending Christmas in a house up in Northumbria, near to relatives of my sister’s husband. The house is in a National Park where everything is strictly controlled to keep modern civilisation from spoiling the historic beauty of the land.

sarahonhill

Not far from here is Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd Century AD to mark what was effectively the northern limit of the Roman Empire. (1800 years ago and it’s still standing – they don’t build them like that anymore !)

So this morning we went for a family walk amongst the hills, moorland, and forests of the area. The temperature here is about + 4C / 40F. The wind is about 20 miles per hour.

And then it started raining……. Fortunately, some among us decided to turn back early and got the fire going, so when the rest of the party arrived back soaking wet the house was reasonably warm.

I can see why the Romans invented hypocausts and underfloor central heating. Nevertheless I can understand why the Romans didn’t hang around here for long……

Getting away from Modern Technology

I am quite comfortable with modern technology, but I use it rather than have it use me, if you see what I mean.

Certainly what is going on in Facebook is something I stay clear of, and I don’t need to chase attention or “likes”.

And email…… well I use it for business but again I don’t feel the need to be in 24 hour contact with it either to run my business or keep in contact with stuff.

I mean, like, what is really important ?? And do I have to respond right now ?? And sometimes I think that mobile phones, the internet, gmail, and Facebook are more curses than blessings because they are just so intrusive and create that “knee jerk” response.

Dave is of a similar view and is trying to keep the technology in France unobtrusive. Now the house we are staying at has no internet access at all.

It sits in a fold in the ground and consequently there is no mobile phone signal. There is no wi-fi. There are no outdoor lights (apparently because in a National Park light pollution is a big No No)

Then I spotted that the owners house has 2 way satellite broadband, identical to the system we have in France. I chatted to one of the owners and asked if they had thought about offering broadband and wi-fi as an upsell.

From their reaction you would have thought I was proposing building a nuclear reactor next door !!

=======

Angela and Kathy on my support team have created and launched their first product called “AdSense HQ” (round of applause for them please !!)

Adsense is where you put Google adverts on your site and you get paid by Google. It works well where you have a niche of customers and you build sites to match.

It’s more of what I call a hobby income, but it does have the virtue of being “fire and forget ” You do the work once to build and market the site and continue to get paid week after week for years to come.

I have a few sites I built way back before I got into internet marketing properly and they still generate me a bit of money each month.

So if you are looking for something to do this Christmas then check this out Adsense HQ

Sarah Staar IM Newsletter – The 7K dyslexic Mistake

post box

Okay, so I was at an Internet marketing event a couple of months ago and I got chatting to Neil Stafford. He told me about a cool strategy, promoting webinars using direct mail, you know “snail mail”, old fashioned paper post…

I thought to myself okay I am definitely going to try this, sometime….

Because……

Email open rates are pretty low

A one-pager letter  is more personal

You can reach people who may have “switched off” from emails

A couple of weeks later I was brainstorming ways to get more traffic to my new squeeze page promoting my next webinar.

The next morning (Friday) I phoned up  the direct mail company, they told me it was definitely possible to get a direct mail sales letter out and have it delivered to people’s houses by Monday or Tuesday.

Deadlines were tight BUT if I could get the letter to them within the next couple of hours they could guarantee the delivery in time for my webinar.

I put the phone down grabbed my direct marketing box file, full of marketing letters from other internet marketers, and ran downstairs.

I just dumped the contents on the living room floor and started analysing what other marketers were doing with direct mail. After about an hour or two I had a clear idea in my mind of what I was going to talk about in my sales letter.

I quickly put together a one page sales letter, printed it out, and sort of proofread it.

Okay I must admit I proofread it about as good as a dyslexic person can !

I sent it over to the mail house along with an Excel spreadsheet of names and addresses of 600 of my customers, and paid them £271.

Phew !!!   I just about made it in time……

Okay now here’s the funny part…..

I get a Skype message on Tuesday morning from one of my team, Catherine. (I  had put her name on the list as a seed name to check the mailing and timing)

She told me I had made a big error in the headline.

It was meant to say how to make £1K per day……… instead it said how to make £1 per day!!!!

Now the interesting part is I was tracking all of the traffic that was coming from the direct mail piece.

I have just looked at my numbers.

Now bearing in mind all the sales aren’t all in yet, but it looks like we’ve made over $7000 so far just from the direct mail traffic.

Now that’s not a bad return, considering I only spent £270 on the traffic!!

And the point is….

It’s better to do something badly, than not do something at all!

I think I will try a bit more of this direct-mail stuff…… I will keep you informed of what happens. I think next time I will get someone else to write the sales letter!!! (Dave ??!!)

Christmas Affiliate marketing

Quite a few people think that Christmas is not a good time to promote Internet Marketing products – especially of the knowledge based sort.

However if you are a regular reader of this newsletter you will know that my experience is exactly the opposite !

In fact, one of the best times to promote offers is when people have had enough of the food (and maybe the annoying friends or family) and they are thinking about What Xmas has cost them.

What they are going to do different in their lives next year.

So why not get into Affiliate marketing with Affiliate Formula X:-)

You will find at least one way you can recoup the cost of Christmas…

And it’s going to be more entertaining.

And it’s going to help you start the New Year with a bang !
